The Art of Improvisation in Tango

Improvisation is one of the key pillars of tango; improvisation comes to us with the gifts of originality, joy, organicity.  Yet improvisation is often (mis)understood as “lack of preparedness”, “anything goes” or “come (dance) what may”.

Tango is not one form, one structure; it is connection through individual communication and expression.  Tango is rooted in improvisation and exploration and we need to learn how to approach improvisation and make it work best.

Improvisation is a process: it grows, you nurture it, you learn to listen to it, you learn from it.  You use improvisation to explore movement, music, manners of expression.  Through improvisation you find things, you organise them, you select and choose some them.  Improvisation is the spirit of tango and it is what keeps tango alive and growing.

The 3 hours of workshops will cover:

  1. Principles of improvisation: how to start improvising, how to stay in the improvisation.  Classic improvisation exercises; movement multipliers
  2. Choosing what is best for you and remembering an improvised structure

Topics covered:

a) Systems of travelling in tango and directions of movement

b) Asymmetry in the tango couple, circular movement

c) Reversing the order of a sequence of movements

d) Role-changing, technique and communication

e) Working with sets of elements, transitions between elements

*Have video-recording devices handy and ready to use; have pen and paper at hand.  Loose garments and comfortable dance shoes recommended.

Tango Teachers

Daniel-Mandita-si-Amalia-Iscu-maestri-tango-tangent

Daniel Mandita and Amalia Iscu have been teaching tango for nearly 19 (nineteen) years and have guided countless dancers in Romania and abroad. Some of their students teach and perform in most of the major cities in Romania and several European countries.

Amalia and Daniel have performed on national and international stages for more than 17 years and in over 150 tango shows. Their tango education started with traditional Argentinian milongueros and then continued on to some of the greatest masters of tango today such as Gustavo Naveira and Pablo Veron.

Their style of teaching is focused on clear explanations and preliminary exercises that can be practised individually and can also be incorporated into the dance. Amalia and Daniel believe strongly that tango should be danced, enjoyed, studied and explored and that tango can become a means of enriching one’s life.
